The Good Shepherd

Jesus uses the picture of a shepherd to show His care, guidance, and willing sacrifice. His people are not unknown or abandoned. They belong to Him, and He knows them.

John 10:14
BSB
14 I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me,

Knowing His Voice

In a world full of voices, familiarity matters. The sheep recognize the shepherd because they know him. In the same way, time in God's Word helps us become more attentive to the voice of the One who leads us.

John 10:11
BSB
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

A Shepherd Who Stays

Jesus is not like a hired hand who runs when danger comes. He remains with His sheep and gives Himself for them. His care is proven by His willingness to protect and save.

John 10:16
BSB
16 I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd.

One Flock, One Shepherd

The Good Shepherd gathers His people into one flock. His fold is larger than we may expect, shaped by His call rather than by our limited view.

John 10:15
BSB
15 just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.

Freely Given

No one takes Jesus' life from Him. He lays it down freely. That willing sacrifice gives us reason to trust Him with our lives, our fears, and our future.
